Directors Statement:
“I wanted to make a multi layered film that upon surface levels takes the viewer to places they wouldn’t expect. Being intrigued by issues of sexuality and gender I wanted to show a story that is a mix of genres that pushes the viewers assumptions and ideologies. This film is inspired by real events and I made the film as stories like this need to be told.”
The Catch is a film inspired by the real life fetish and kink scene the Director stumbled upon in Melbourne. Going to private parties, clubs, and performance events she discovered an intimate and seductive scene that drew her in.
Welcomed by regulars at the clubs and private parties she discovered a complex and titillating world at play that was not easy to define. During conversations with the people in the scene she discovered a lifestyle choice for many people who like to live out of the comfort zones of sex, relationships and intimacy.

This underground scene was the inspiration for the film and she learnt through research and experience that the main premise for the kink scene is “safe, sane and consensual” acts. There is a certain language of communication, codes of conduct and safe guards that stop certain boundaries of safety being crossed.
Of course there are some people who cross this line deliberately and without thinking about the repercussions. Certain crimes have been committed in the scene and this is not encouraged by the film. The kink scene endorses mutual respect and consent. As it is such a small scene it is very protective of who it lets in and is quick to discard of those who do not act within its social guidelines.
Inspired by real life occurrences of kidnap fantasies for both the kidnaper and kidnapee the Director investigated what pushes people to test the extremes of their sexuality, gender, identity and limits.
